"I am proud that night after night and album after album, a mass of humanity I now refer to lovingly as the pop underground, come together and sing. Whether it's in theaters and concert venues around the world, in the privacy of our own homes or the constantly shifting landscape of social media, we are a scrappy tribe and we stand for something: Music that is found, shared and cared for despite access to traditional outlets; music that lives virally and through word of mouth; music that tells a story that people want to retell." - Andrew McMahon

I'm so excited to get the recorded version of this song. I was kind of afraid that Andrew would let go of the synth-y pop of TPU for this album and kind of go in an opposite direction but it's definitely still there in this song and it makes me happyyy.

I'm about to butcher this but here it goes...

.....
Wrote a new song about your new life
Like steps I retraced
....
Flashback...
I'm almost there

Headlights in the driveway
You stand at the window waiting
Stars...tonight
One million fires burning
Out there on the high dive
You dance with your headphones on
So I could watch you all night long
Dancing to someone else's song
Oh dancing to someone else's song

Black jacket, a blue motorbike
...in the moonlight
Teenagers in the alley kissing
...gas pump
...street sign
...forty five
Through all the shadows you can hear the sound

My tablet crapped out on me so I couldn't finish. Have I mentioned I hate not having an actual computer?

There's something about Echo Park in there somewhere too

I got sent a pretty clear MP3 copy of a different live recording that has the whole song, and I took a shot at transcribing. The second verse is still pretty unclear but I gave it a shot. The intro is a discussion about how the song is about what would change in life if we made a few choices differently, and he talks about almost making a wrong choice seven years ago, which gives some context to the whole thing. Anyway...

i took the train home facing backwards
another hopeless chase
like a part indian summer
i wrote a new song about your new life
like steps i retraced
block letters in a little black notebook
yeah

flashbacks get me close
i'm almost there

headlights in your driveway
you stand in the window waiting
the stars are out tonight
one million fires burning
out there on the high dive
you would dance with your headphones on tonight
i'd watch you all night long
dancing to someone else's song
dancing to someone else's song
dancing to someone else's

black jacket, a blue motorbike
i pass the mission in the moonlight
teenagers in the alley kissing
(split the gas pump, saw the street sign
didn't mean to go 45) - This part is super unclear. Basically all I have for sure is the gas pump and 45.
the shadows will be here if you miss out

flashbacks get me close
i'm almost there

headlights in your driveway
you stand in the window waiting
the stars are out tonight
one million fires burning
out there on the high dive
you would dance with your headphones on tonight
i'd watch you all night long
dancing to someone else's song
dancing to someone else's song
dancing to someone else's

flashbacks get me close
but i'm scared it's someone else's

headlights in your driveway
you stand in the window waiting
the stars are out tonight
one million fires burning
meet me on the high dive
you would dance with your headphones on tonight
i'd watch you all night long
dancing to someone else's song
dancing to someone else's song
dancing to someone else's song
to someone else's song
to someone else's song
to someone else's
someone else's
someone else's song

I love this song! It has so much energy and Andrew clearly loves playing it for his fans at the shows I've seen. Can't wait for the album!

I just now read the context from the Buzzfeed article and I totally called it on the meaning even with the garbled live lyrics. I am such an A+ fan (lmao jk).

Hahaha, hey it definitely reads that way too! Except idk why a ghost would need a motorbike. I just love that it continues the creepy-in-love theme from Miss California; first kidnapping, now stalking and voyeurism, FOR LOVE! XD

Miss California is the creepiest song on the freaking planet. I swear.

"When they can't find you I'm sure I'll be the one they blame
But they can't prove anything"

When I kidnap you and murder you, they'll try to blame me, but I've hidden the evidence so they can't prove anything.

Lmao aww these songmeanings interpretations making a comeback That Miss CA interpretation kills me. I think it's such a sweet song and one of my favorites off TGP and I love it so when that interpretation came out I was like WHAT HOW COULD YOU THINK THAT'S WHAT IT'S ABOUT?! It can really be read the wrong way though lol

There is definitely a bit of a "creeper" thread to follow in some songs lol i.e. certain lines from I'm Not Sorry and Catching Cold.

Nothing compares to Josh's "I Won't Make You" … i.e. "I really want to have sex with you one last time but you don't so okay I won't make you." LIKE OKAY JOSH.

I mean I really like the verse (telephone number I got for you… it's funny when you find the words to say you find no reply) but the majority of that song is gross.
