Welcome to The Underground
"I am proud that night after night and album after album, a mass of humanity I now refer to lovingly as the pop underground, come together and sing. Whether it's in theaters and concert venues around the world, in the privacy of our own homes or the constantly shifting landscape of social media, we are a scrappy tribe and we stand for something: Music that is found, shared and cared for despite access to traditional outlets; music that lives virally and through word of mouth; music that tells a story that people want to retell." - Andrew McMahon

In the week leading up to the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony, McMahon spent his days locked away in a Topanga cabin without a cell phone, writing as much as possible for his next full-length.

"I have a massive personal fire under my ass right now, that's for sure," McMahon says. "In a sense, I feel like I did when I was transitioning from Something Corporate to Jack's. There was just so much on the line. When I was making that music, I think professionally I had so much to lose.

"I won't lie, it's not a fear-based pressure, because I'm really excited and I'm really content in the work that I'm doing right now," he continues. "But there is a sense for me right now that I have to make this next thing my calling card. It's going to be my first full-length under my name, and I want it to be my best record. I'm pretty hell-bent on it being so."

What have you been working on? What have you been coming up with?
It’s early. I’ve got about five or six songs that are about to take shape. And I sort of play this game—kind of like leap frog—where I go up and I’ll work on a new song and I’ll start going back, and revising and working on the old songs. And this is the first time that I’ve done that in a while, where I’m really just writing a batch of songs for a week at a time. It’s probably too early to say what it is going to be. I’m definitely taking the opportunity to acquaint myself with the piano in a big way. I think my last couple of records got away from that and it was really kind of this moment where I was like, “Okay, you’re a piano-player. That is your heart and soul.” No pun intended. That’s the best of my work—with me at the piano. I’ve really just been focusing on developing the parts of the piano and really, I’m just digging in and not being afraid if it doesn’t come quickly. You know, not having any fear about revising, and rewriting and developing it causelessly and endlessly until it is finished. That is kind of the moment that I am in right now. I’m going to keep doing it until the end of the year.

"There's virtually no guitars on the entire record. We made the conscious choice to leave them off in an effort to make more space for the vocals and piano. The synth elements are lusher — almost orchestral, with string and horn patches — rather than letting the synths take over the melodies."

Is this going to be a full album as opposed to the TPU EP? And do we know anything about release dates? Of course, knowing Andrew, any release date is sure to change many times...

Yeah this will be a full LP. And Andrew has stopped giving out dates because he says he's never right about them, lol, but he has implied it will be in the fall.

Last night he said we should look for release date info within the next couple weeks. But from the way he was talking that we are looking at a fall release if not late summer release.

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness Releases
New Single "Cecilia and the Satellite"

From His Upcoming Self-Titled Album
To Be Released This Fall On Vanguard Records

Currently On Tour with Matt Nathanson & Gavin DeGraw

Headline Dates Begin October 14th

July 21, 2014 - Andrew McMahon has been through a lot in his 32 years on earth: like all of us, he has lived joy, pain, accident, and illness; unlike most he's also dealt with the vagaries of the music business, the strains of tour; he has battled cancer and witnessed the birth of his first child. Life has changed and so has Andrew. If, as McMahon says, "music is a mirror to the adventure of living," each new chapter of life deserves its own title. As such, his music will go forward under the name Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.

As AMITW, he has shared his new single, "Cecilia and the Satellite." The track is from his forthcoming self-titled album, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness to be released this fall, marking his debut on Vanguard Records. "Cecilia" is a triumphal pop smash, its soaring chorus anchored by a bass line like the steady thump of a heartbeat. An ode to his new daughter, McMahon gently declares, "for all the things my hands have held the best by far is you."

Listen to "Cecilia and the Satellite" on SoundCloud.

Listen to "Cecilia and the Satellite" on YouTube.

McMahon says of the new name, "I suppose my wilderness is mostly an abstract one. Since putting Jack's Mannequin behind me, I have forced myself into strange spaces seeking new stimulus. New lights on the path to the high of a finished song. I've met amazing people in the process; people who have propped this mission up, adding a palate of sound and perspective. This new name carries with it the spirit of that collaboration."

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness will be released this fall. McMahon describes the recording process as moving "from more than one Southern California garage, to a cabin set deep in Topanga Canyon, to a shoebox studio in the thick of the Hollywood tourist traps. The only constants have been my keyboard and a desire to make my best music."

McMahon is currently on tour, opening a string of dates for Matt Nathanson and Gavin Degraw across the US. He will also be headlining shows beginning October 14th. Tour dates are listed below with more to be announced at a later date. For updates and more information visit: http://www.andrewmcmahon.com/

Man, I really hope In The Wilderness (totally what I'm gonna start calling it as shorthand) doesn't get pushed back, but I suppose if Vanguard said it and not Andrew we should be fine.

I'm also freaking out about this record a little because it seems like it's back to his roots again and while TPU was a fun electropop romp, and was a valid direction, nothing beats Andrew and Lieutenant Dan (is he still playing Dan?)

I'd kind of expect the album to be released right before he heads on tour on 10/14 so that fans will have had a chance to hear the songs already but you never know.

It's been tentatively mentioned at shows that the release will be in October

And yeah lol for me it's Andrew McMahon's "...In the Wilderness" album because I am not writing out that full phrase twice. Sorry Andrew!

I go with AM in the Wilderness. Mostly because he wrote it like that in a post or something and then it got into my head that that would be the actual name, and I was disappointed it was actually Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.

I was not even expecting that it would be album art and release date today, what a happy surprise

Not the kind of cover I was expecting (I think I was getting used to seeing the type used for the tour and CatS), but it's really beautiful!
